Welcome to the Roots of the World Blog and North East Gig Guide December 2013

Featuring North East Artist of the Month
Gareth is a singer-songwriter hailing originally from Bangor in Northern Ireland but now based in the Tyne Valley in North-East England. Gareth returns to Newcastle Roots Music Radio as the featured North East England artist of the month, a first for the podcast. There's also a double helping of his crisp playing, thoughtful and challenging lyrics and beautiful arrangements. We hear two tracks from his new album "Now But Not Yet",  and tow from last year's Christmas album "Nine Lessons". He is also doing a wee bit of touring so check out his website by clicking on the link above.

North East Gig Guide: Folk, Roots and World
Newcastle and Gateshead
There's the smell of mulled wine and mince pies in the air so there are festive goings on and the roots music scene in the north east is not immune.
Sage Gateshead has the very exciting and other wordly choral  experiences from the Russian Patriarchate Choir of Moscow (12th) who evoke the spirit of ancient Russia but was suppressed in doing this during the Soviet era.
Bulgaria chips in chorally with the incredible sound of the Bulgarian Angelite Choir (18th), which you can hear on the podcast. One commentator, jaro.de, talked of "One listener might think of archaic sound worlds from far distant times , another of the marriage of avant-garde and the medieval " . A rich musical evening clearly in the offing.

Folkwise Kate Rusby brings her Yorkshire inspired folk and the songs of her two Christmas albums on the 19th.

If you wish to have an evening of belting, foot tapping, folk played with tight precision, creativity, and passion KAN, heard on the podcast are not to be missed.
The Jumpin'Hot Club in conjunction with Crossings Band/Group bring you this Tyneside world music /community group's Christmas party. I'll be playing a world beats DJ set, it's at Cluny 2 (5th). You will hear from the band, who play an exciting mix, drawing on ska, Latin, African and near Eastern influences and the women's choir-not to be missed.  The traditional Martin Stephenson evening is hosted by Cluny 2, (21st) and there is a feast of free local roots music to aid the festive celebrations on the afternoon of the 22nd at Cluny, including Monkey Junk, Gem Andrews, Shipcote and Friends and Lesley Roley....

The Cluny not only has the above Jumpin'Hot gigs but also amongst other delights has local blues favourites recently returned from the US of A, the Trevor Sewell Band on the 27th, Prelude have Trevor for company on the 13th to raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care, and local country man with his very own band Tony Bengtsson hits the Ouseburn Valley venue on the 19th and hear the band here is a taster of Tony...

The Cumberland Arms perched above the Cluny has Balkan fun with the brilliant band the Baghdaddies on the 6th; Yorkshire based folk singer Beccy Owen launching her new album , IMAGO, on the 14th, well it's actually a "split site launch" but I am sure those attending will be more than satisfied with there half. Anyway, here's a taster from the album.

If you fancy some folk-rock, and some reanimation of the psychic landscapes of Great Britain Trembling Bells might be for you on the 8th.
The Butterfly Cabinet in Heaton as always plays host to the Monkey Junk Blues Club  at the Butterfly Cabinet, Heaton on a Thursday to blues/bluesy folk etc. Thursday 12th sees local folk/blues duet Skylark Song bring their powerful intense brand of folk blues to the club. Catch their new single on the podcast. A link can be found  in the above playlist.
Bar Loco has local funk/latin band Burundanga on December 21st. Ideal Christmas prep to lose a few pounds groovin' prior to the culinary onslaught! You can also catch the Tyneside Latinistas at  Boiler Shop Steamer (7th).
County Durham
Old Cinema Launderette, Durham has the "Cornish Laura Marling" according to a Cornish paper, she's called Kezia , has a beautifully ethereal voice, she's on the podcast and at the Old Cinema on the 6th. Richmond lass Pip Mountjoy brings her gorgeous songwriting on the 7th supporting Chris TT:
"The genius of Chris T-T’s songwriting is his ability to humanise even the most outlandish conceits, until they seem instead like brilliant ideas nobody else would’ve come up with. "(The Guardian)
Darlington Folk Club welcomes County Durham's very own French folkstress Flossie Malavialle on the 12th. Catch her in the podcast and click on the link in the playlist to inform yourself of all things Flossie.

Jez Lowe plays Bishop Auckland Town Hall on the 18th-Hear him on the podcast (although at the time of preparing the podcast Bishop Auckland gig unfortunately was not on their website).
Northumberland
Jez Lowe brings his take on a folkie north east Christmas to the Queen's Hall, Hexham on the 14th and Cramlington Folk Club on the 21st.
Gareth Davies-Jones's "Nine Lessons" album is being toured by him in the county, dates on the website (link to be found in the playlist above) with dates at Sehaouses, Wylam and Stocksfield.
Kathryn Tickell brings her new "The Side" project to the Maltings Berwick.

A true icon of the north east roots scene Rod Clements, Lindisfarne member and lyricist plays Rothbury Roots (19th). Hear him on the podcast and here:

South Tyneside and Sunderland
South Shields Folk Club has a gig most Sunday nights at the Customs House. The 15th sees Teeside's famous Wilson Family, a trad singing treat with deep local roots!
The Davy Lamp Folk Club are having a relatively quiet (and deservedly so) month, but they have the Christmas Party (14th) and founders of the South Shields Folk Clung the Marsden Rattlers (see video below) plus Jim Sharpe (7th).
Teeside
The Georgian Theatre in Stockton has Cerys Matthews on the 5th, bringing songs from her Christmas album, catch her on my podcast.
